Adamson BBQ fundraising goal Increased to $500K following continued targeting by government

The organizer of the Adamson BBQ Legal Defence Fund, Barry McNamar, posted the following update on the ongoing GoFundMe fundraising page. Following his arrest for opening his small business and defying lockdown orders in Toronto Adam Skelly was advised by his lawyers that his legal fight, should it go to the supreme court, could cost upwards of $350,000 - which is why McNamar set the target at that amount. He recently updated the GoFundMe page and said he would be changing that number.

"Enough of you have said that you don’t want me to take this GoFundMe campaign down on December 19.

You told me that you want to give monthly, or weekly.

And you said that the ongoing success of this campaign stands as a daily reminder to the political class that we’ve all had enough.

Well, there is one more valid reason to keep this campaign active.

Adam’s counsel called me yesterday informing me that bylaw officers and government officials have made it their mission in life to attend each of Adam’s locations every single day in an effort to find something legitimate to complain about and exhaust his financial resources.

That’s right.

Rather than respond to your support with an effort to understand the needs of small business, the Tory and Ford governments have started to use the power of your tax dollars to crush the one small business person who is out there taking a stand.

McNamar clarified to Muskoka Post today that ”100% of the funds, after GoFundMe fees, are going directly into a Trust held by Adam’s legal counsel. Since the GoFundMe went public, the municipal and provincial authorities have poured on the gas. They have been going to all of Adam’s locations daily burying him in fines and new requirements to re-open, trying to exhaust his funding. As a result, his legal counsel called me yesterday and asked that I keep the fundraising campaign going. As promised, all of the funds are going to support Adam’s efforts to challenge the asymmetric nature of the COVID regulations. I cannot change the purpose of the funding without violating the ethics of the fundraising profession. As a result, the funding is going to support the initial cause- the Adamson BBQ Legal Defence.”
